Price is not competitive, if you aren't a regular they don't want to deal with you. I'm in the middle of a house remodel and was sent in by my contractor who uses them exclusively. After the treatment I received I will not allow any of their materials used on our project. My contractor agrees wholeheartedly. I support buying local whenever possible, but for this project and future projects Michigan City local will work as well.
We have been in La Porte less than a year but have been to Big C Lumber at least a dozen times. The staff is polite and efficient. By the time you drive to the lot someone is there to help you. Without asking they put an eye on the lumber so you get a good board and they have always loaded my SUV carefully. They had no problem cutting longer pieces when needed. Their prices might be a bit more than HD or Lowes but considering the time and gas I save they are worth.
